Question:  I’ve always wanted to grow lavender.  How do I get started?

Answer:  Begin with Grosso lavender, known as the workhorse of lavender because it is hardy, produces a large plant, and has beautiful long, fragrant blooms, says Denise Scaringi, co-owner of Lavender Hills of Kentucky in Brooksville.

Grosso lavender typically blooms in mid-June to mid-July and if you cut the blooms it will provide a second bloom in late August to September, Scaringi says.

Lavender needs a sunny spot with good drainage.  Don’t over-water lavender.  Mulch with sand or crushed limestone rather than regular mulch.

Prune lavender in the spring or fall.

You have time to plan for adding lavender to your landscape.  June is the best time for planting, she says.
